The math behind SIP comparison
Each scenario in the comparison uses the standard future value of an annuity formula, identical to the one in our SIP calculator:
FV = P × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r] × (1 + r)
Where P is the monthly SIP amount, r is the monthly rate of return (annual rate ÷ 12), n is the number of months (years × 12), and FV is the future value. The (1 + r) factor at the end accounts for the fact that SIP instalments are typically invested at the start of each month.
The invested amount is P × n. The returns are FV − invested. The total is FV. The calculator runs this formula three times — once for each scenario — and highlights the scenario with the highest FV. Mathematically, this is a simple calculation; the value is in seeing all three results next to each other so you can compare the trade-offs.

The winner is Scenario C — adding 5 years to the horizon nearly doubles the corpus, despite the same monthly investment. This is the power of compounding: extra years at the end matter far more than extra rupees at the start.
Higher return vs longer duration
A 1% increase in expected return (say 12% to 13%) over 20 years produces roughly the same boost as adding 3–4 years to the tenure. But a 1% higher return is not guaranteed — it requires picking a fund that outperforms, which is hard. A longer tenure is something you control. When in doubt, prioritise time over return.
Step-up vs flat
Compare a flat ₹10,000 SIP for 20 years at 12% (final corpus ≈ ₹1 crore) to a stepped-up SIP starting at ₹7,000 with a 10% annual step-up for 20 years at 12% (final corpus also ≈ ₹1 crore, but starting cashflow is 30% lower). How to use the comparison to refine your SIP plan
The comparison calculator is most useful when you have a specific decision to make. Start by entering your current SIP as Scenario A — your actual monthly amount, your actual expected return, your actual remaining tenure. Then use Scenarios B and C to model two alternatives you are considering.
For example, suppose you currently invest ₹10,000 per month in a Nifty 50 index fund (assume 11%) for 15 years, and you are considering two changes: (B) increasing the SIP to ₹12,000 per month, or (C) switching to a flexi-cap fund (assume 12%) and keeping the SIP at ₹10,000. Plug in all three and compare. You will typically find that increasing the SIP amount wins, because it is a guaranteed input change — a 1% higher return is an assumption that may or may not materialise.

What this calculator does NOT account for
The comparison calculator uses the same assumptions as our regular SIP calculator — and has the same limitations. It does not account for inflation, so all three scenarios are in nominal rupees, not real purchasing power. A ₹1 crore corpus in 20 years will buy roughly what ₹35–40 lakh buys today.
It also does not model taxes. Equity mutual fund gains above ₹1.25 lakh per financial year are taxed at 12.5% LTCG (post-July 2024 Budget). To compare post-tax outcomes, knock 1–2 percentage points off your expected return for each scenario.
Finally, the calculator assumes constant monthly investments and constant returns. In real life, you may step up your SIP, pause it during a job loss, or switch funds mid-way. Treat the comparison as a planning anchor — the relative ranking of scenarios is more reliable than the absolute numbers.
